Love's Song

He loved her madly, madly.

Her hazel blue eyes,
Mixing joy with sorrows
Of past pain, promised depths of compassion.

Her raucous laugh relished The Joke:
The irony in humor,
And the irony behind it.

When she spoke,
Her voice rang of liberties
He'd never dreamed of.

And when she slipped her hand in his
And smiled, they were

Then and there each other's.
Life clicked.
Her open gaze was a child's.
Trembling, they vowed never to part.

When the time came for them to part,
He sobbed.  Sobbing with him,
She held his hands, watching over him.

Life broke.
Her open gaze was a child's.
Trembling, they said good-bye.
