Carl Hathwell was born in East Los Angeles. His upbringing was a cultural mix, his mother being Mexican, his father English German. He attended Stanford University where he got a B.A. in Latin American History.

After two years in the army, he attended a school in Phoenix, Arizona to study foreign trade. Then he moved to New York City and worked a couple of years for a film distribution company, advising customers on their film rental programs.

The next ten years spent in Paris attending the state film school (IDHEC) and working in feature-length French films as an assistant director for such directors as Francois Truffaut, Claude Berri, and Michel Deville. He directed his own short called "Lilly and the Kid."

Carl is now involved in writing scripts and poetry. He would enjoy talking to people about any aspects of this career sketch. His phone number is (415) 626-4239.
