Berkeley Photographer Awarded Artistic Grant, Goes to FotoFest

Jan Camp, a Berkeley-based artist, recently received two grants to support her work from the Ruth Chenven Foundation and the Museo Italo/Americano. She was also chosen to exhibit at FotoFest, a 30-day photography exposition running this month in Houston. The centerpiece of her works at FotoFest are a series of silver prints titled Reflections from Mid Life.

"I love the silver print and I love painting," says Camp. She has also embarked on a new approach, placing objects on the bed of her scanner and positioning them selectively to convey the mood she has chosen. One of the first images she composed this way, titled Pears, shows a trio of fruit and a small scissors. Additional examples of her work with the scanner can be seen online.

Camp will also be showing in a group photo exhibit at San Francisco Camera Works in May and at the Sherry Frumkin Gallery, Santa Monica, from June 6 — July 11. The Museo Italo/Americano at Fort Mason, San Francisco, has also scheduled a Camp exhibit for sometime in 1999.
