From the Darkroom: Black & White & Color

Eleven artists—Jan Camp, Jayson Carpenter, Arnold Dubnick, Sharmon Goff, Kent Lacin, Richard J. Meisinger, Jr., Linda Pearson, Howard Rubenstein, Michael Solomon, Russ Solomon, Roger Vail—have been invited to participate in an exhibition of "straight photography" at the Solomon Dubnick Gallery. While the photographers invited use a range of equipment and techniques, the unifying theme of the exhibition centers around the idea of the artist as directly and intimately involved in the creation of the photograph through traditional darkroom processes. Included in the exhibition are still lifes, landscapes, portraits and documentary photographs. . . .

Jan Camp uses the genre of still life to create images which also reflect on the passing of time. Using symbols of age and the idea of time passing, Camp's choice of flowers, fruits, mirrors, candles and portraits within photographs connect her work with the Dutch "vanitas" paintings of the seventeenth century.

. . . From the Darkroom provides many opportunities for focus and reflection.

From the Darkroom: Black & White & Color [was] on view through March 2 at Solomon Dubnick Gallery, 2131 Northrop Ave., Sacramento.

Click on Vanitas for more information on that subject in a separate window.
